Movements in Colour (ECM)

Andy has written stunning new repertoire for a starry international band that features long-term collaborators guitarist John Parricelli and tabla virtuoso and percussionist Kuljit Bhamra, alongside two of Norway's finest - the shimmering, other-worldly textures of guitarist and electronics artist Eivind Aarset, and legendary bassist Arild Andersen. The music for this extraordinarily gifted line-up bears all Sheppard’s famed characteristics - melodic themes, inventive use of texture and an unerring sense of rhythm which sets the pace for world jazz at its inclassifiable best.

"One of ECM's most eminently accessible records, Movements in Colour demonstrates the beauty of simplicity, the appeal of modesty. It's deceptively difficult to create music that speaks on a broad, elemental level, and with Movements in Colour Sheppard has succeeded in creating an album of unassuming richness in texture, color and melodic depth. ‘With his soft sound, delicate massaging of tonal minutiae, improvisational inventiveness and eclectic tastes, Andy Sheppard has long sounded like an ECM artist. … Sheppard's improvising style, in which he fits short phrases into grooves and heats them slowly, makes this album bloom on successive listenings…it's lyrical, playful, accessible - and pure Sheppard.’ (Guardian, 4 stars)

‘These seven tracks take their cue from a number of paintings and artists that Sheppard admires and have that same lightness and airiness that the saxophonist brings to much of his work…a profound and uplifting grasp of the power of colour…shows in the way these five musicians combine to kaleidoscopic effect that matters most rather than their solo contributions.  The closing track, ‘International Blue’ and the opener, ‘La Tristesse du Roi’, play with other emotions but in the main this is warm, upbeat, yet reflective music beautifully played and recorded. (Jazzwise, 4 stars)

‘It was only a question of time - the British saxophonist’s musical path has been leading him in an ECM-compatible direction for a while now…this is one of their most accessible and welcoming. Deserves to be a big hit! (The Jazz Breakfast)
