ANDY SHEPPARD & JOANNA McGREGOR
In this unique collaborative event, saxophonist Andy Sheppard will perform with pianist Joanna MacGregor in their first large commisssion together, accompanied by the poetry of Bernadine Evaristo and photographic images by Fabian Monheim and Thomas Napper.
Cityscapes will take place at St. Bartholomew-the-Great (Cloth Fair, London EC1) on Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 June at 6.30pm and 8.30pm both days.
Cityscapes is a multi-media snapshot of the City of London, exploring the layers of local history through an extended improvisation, weaving music, words and images together. Delving into the rhythms of city life, from the chop of the butcher's block in Smithfield to footfalls on London Bridge, the world premiere of this contemporary diary will be set against the mysterious beauty of St. Bartholomew-the-Great, chosen by the performing artists for its rich history.
Following this, Sheppard - drummer and percussionist Mark Mondesir - will perform Nocturnal Tourist (his 2002 album for Provocateur Records) at The Spitz on Thursday 26 June at 9.00pm. Nocturnal Tourist builds on a solo performance inspired by Sheppard's worldwide travels and the extraordinary range of musical partners he has encountered along the way. It also reflects his recent interest in new music technologies and the grooves of club culture, and weaves saxophone improvisations into fragments of spoken words and sampled urban sounds.
